I thought it would be fun to do a Q&A this week, but before we begin, I have a question for you:
Lately, a lot of people have been asking how I make my animations. So last week, I posted a question on Substack Notes asking what kind of animation people would most like to learn. The response was WAY bigger than I expected. So many great ideas came in. But I quickly realized my question had been too vague.
I make 99% of my work using Adobe After Effects, but several people specifically asked for tutorials using free or inexpensive software like Stop Motion Studio, Krita, DaVinci Resolve, and Procreate… I totally get it. Adobe software is expensive, the full Creative Cloud suite costs $60/month. That said, I’ve also heard from quite a few of you who are photographers, illustrators, or designers and already have Adobe subscriptions.
So this poll will help me get a clearer sense of what kinds of tutorials would be most helpful. Don’t worry, I’ll still make some tutorials using free or low-cost tools, regardless of the poll results. I just need to spend some time experimenting with them first to make sure I actually have something useful to share.
If you’re new here, this montage film is a good introduction to my animation work. The music is Etude 1 by Nico Muhly and Nadia Sirota.
Now I’ll turn it over to you. Ask me anything—it doesn’t have to be about animation. I’m happy to chat about filmmaking, music, painting, whatever! See you in the comments. 👀
What is your organization like for your clips and source materials? What is the balance of self-recorded clips vs open access media vs something else? Do you reuse assets a lot or often make new for each project?
Do you play any instruments?
What's your favourite art material? And tool?
Thanks for doing a Q&A! Looking forward to reading the results and whatever else emerges in this wonderful newsletter. ☺️
Can't wait for these tutorials and to see all of the art that comes from them!
